does anyone have a clue as to could be causing this problem ?
I am able to get to the other window managers from a graphical login,
but I prefer
to use init 3, and I still have the problem of X crahing when I hit the
CTRL-ALT-F2 sequence.

put the installation disk in and do an expert install,
when you get to the disk partitioning, just delete the linux partition,
click done then exit the install

If you automatically boot into X at startup and subsequently X fails, do
not ssume that you have to do a reinstall.
if you are using LILO then at the boot prompt just type in linux 3 and
it will boot to a command prompt, from there you can login and as root
run Xconfigurator to fix or just to

It was my pleasure, I'm glad everything worked out.
When I first installed Mandrake I could't get my printer to work either-
it is a parallel port Canon 4400 which every piece of documentatiion says
should work in Linux.
It worked fine in windows so I was stumped.
One day as I was

I downloaded a new theme from kde.themes ('daPhoton') installed it and now
the mouse wheel works fine without any intervention.
I would ask why but since it's working now I won't ;that is until I get
tired of that theme.

I (sigh) reinstalled MDK again (10th time?) but I finally got everything
working ( so far). It took some tweaking, but I think it was worth it.
My problems with the sound stemmed from the fact that the sound driver
