both OSs should detect it automatically.
Or, you could spend many hours, possibly even days, trying to get a
winmodem to work.
Time = money - but only you can work out whether it is worth
spending several hours/days to save £30!

the icons - they work
(on a double-click).
Using the XFCE4 settings launcher from the panel and choosing
Desktop:backdrop it shows that I have selected the purple
background with the centred picture of my cat - but this is not
being displayed!
What have I broken? How do I fix it?

How are you starting XFce4? My initial thought is that you have some
program running in the background that is changing your background.
Switch on computer, select user 'margot', xfce4 is selected by
default, enter my password...I usually have kppp and konsole running
, at least I know how to cure it - thanks!

Errr...I'm afraid I have no idea where to find the startup script!
And what is chbg?
Thanks for your help so far.

Thanks Stephen! Well, here's the file - does it look normal? No
mention of chbg
/download daily, so I can
check it over the course of a couple of months.
What am I looking for, and where am I likely to find it?

before the 2-hour limit is up, and sometimes it takes several
attempts to get reconnected. This makes downloading my Mdk updates a
complete nightmare!
So, although it is worth checking that everything else is working
OK, it's probably a Wanadoo problem.

Why are you using 1470 in front of your ISP's phone number?
Judging by your email address, your ISP is FreeServe. When I had an
account with them, it was
crashing - the only solution I found was to install
beep media player and use that instead - it looks exactly the same
as xmms, but obviously works slightly differently underneath.

Hi Dudes,
Thought I'd see what all the fuss is about with xfce4. Trouble is
some things don't seem to work. Don't have any menus any more - is
this right?
The menus should appear if you right-click anywhere on the desktop.
Did you
using a particular mirror it will get slower for everyone!
Good luck!
