Hey everyone... Go to the Detroit Free Press website and look at the classified ads for buying a house. The metro-Detroit map goes as far north as Flint, as far west as Ann Arbour, as far South as the Ohio border, and as far east as...well, you know.
I am from Flint and tell people that I am from Detroit, because that is the largest commonly known land mark. I know damn well that I am not from Detroit. Oh, and anyone who listens to Detroit radio growing up can lay claim to what Tim Baker is laying claim to. He is from Detroit. No I'm not friends with Tim Baker, I just own one of his records... You mentioned that you work in A2, but are you originally from the area? I can understand that, if you're not from the area, you could see this as a potentially divisive and confusing issue. But it's really very common for anyone from basically east of Jackson to the lake (not to mention north of Toledo to basically...well, the lake) to refer to themselves as "from Detroit". It's not meant to be deceiving. It's just that the so-called "metro Detroit" area really is thought of as that - satellites around Detroit. And the area in question is REALLY large. When people ask me where I'm from, I tell them Detroit. (I was born in Warren and grew up in Sterling Heights.) If they then make it clear that they're actually familiar with the area, I go into suburbs-level detail. 2 more cents, -- Dennis DeSantis www.dennisdesantis.com
