me neither, but when it comes to noteheads we have to balance this
against the need to keep abc as simple as possible. Remember that abc is
not supposed to cover every aspect of music notation.

Mapping notated "pitches" towards percussion sounds it's another story
though. There simply isn't any common standard to hard-code.

In addition to the handful of somewhat common systems there must be
hundreds, if not thousands, of more or less well-thought attempts to
reinvent the wheel like the two you provided links to.

Yes, that seems to be the only option. The exact syntax we end up with
isn't that important as long as it meets these conditions:
    a) It should be as short and simple as possible
    b) It has to be exact and unambigious
    c) It should confirm as closely as possible to current abc syntax
       structure
    d) It has to allow for a percussion map to be defined for a single
       voice in a multivoice score
    e) Percussion mapping code inside the tune body may or may not be
allowed, but must not be mandatory

Maybe not to me or you, but that's not relevant. The important question
is how big an issue it is to the programmers. That is, how much extra
coding does it take to cover all the alternative spellings?
Or are you trying to volunteer for writing a open source drum map parser
yourself?
