Are you sure he's doing a good job?

This sounds like it might be a  lack of attention to detail.   If this is
the case I'd be surprised if he's really doing anything with consistent
quality.

Another option is that he doesn't do well with anything outside of what
he's seen before, and when he encounters something new he just barges ahead
and doesn't know he should ask for help.

Either way this seems like a recipe for disaster.
