  Just a quick comment on this. I think it's all a matter of taste. I find
Alsamixer to be easily the best mixer app I've ever seen. I don't have to
think about how to use it, just a space bar for capture toggle, "m" to
toggle mute and a few things which are already very intuitive.

  I don't even bother with X, and haven't for the past 3 years. GUIs are
the ultimate in "klunkiness" to me. Not everyone agrees with me, and
that's OK, but to run down a smooth app like Alsamixer seems unjustified.
It does what it's supposed to do and does it well. I used to hear the same
arguments about professional tape equipment because many features found on
consumer-grade stuff weren't located on a front-panel switch. Just my 2
cents worth.
