I find individual anectdotal stories unhelpful, because they ignore the
bigger picture. Some try to sell their own small experience as the big
picture. Since you want to play that game, I'll indulge you, despite
its uselessness:

My cousin recently quit working in maternity at a local hospital,
because she couldn't stand what she saw anymore.

Women from all parts of central and south America showing up in labor.
Many just got here within the month for the sole purpose of showing up
at that hospital when labor starts.

Hospital law requires that they "stablilze" them, which of course means
deliver the baby and keep mother and child there long enough to ensure
both are healthy enough to be released, which means treating any
problems that arise and some that were already present. We pay for
every bit of it.

Now the parents have an anchor baby - their very own American citizen.
My cousin informs they are very well versed in what comes next - they
ask for a social worker. They immediate inquire about welfare, food
stamps, housing, etc. All on our dime.

Meanwhile, some other well meaning people from central and south
America who applied to come to America legally, who aren't looking for
handouts, can't get in.

There. Did that move the discussion forward?
