"Its not a personal opinion at all - I like bamboo.
However it is inappropriate for that use and place - It is not a native NJ
Coastal plant and
is out of place and context - thereby devaluing the project. Same for palm
trees.
Use of native plants would increase value and be easier to maintain."

Oh, all right. Understood, and i see where you're coming from with
that.. But i don't think it's realistic. Native plants only? If that were the
case, most all high end landscapes would be out in you're mind. Or maybe they
already are? Plants don't need to be from their native location to survive or
grow well...(btw, bamboo is the easiest plant to grow and won't die even if you
tryed to kill it!) Speciment plants are what make landscapes look well,
something that stands out. Not always of course, but sometimes. Different,
uniqueness. Does AP belong to, or is a part of an organization that requires
only native plantings? If so, then you are 100 percent right, and codes should
be followed.
I don't think bamboo anywhere would decrease a locations value. It may
increase it. People like that sort of thing, it could be looked at as an
attraction. But again, i really dont think the average person is looking this
deeply into a topic like this one. People buy potted palms to place on their
steps in the summer because they like them. They like the way they look. An
attraction. In stores they are usally placed in high traffic areas. Why?
Because they know people want them.
You tend to like to keep things 100 percent historically correct, which
is great. So i totally understand the point you are making!
