*** I too agree.

But the big question is WHY can't we do so?

WHAT is it that prevents us from getting there?

Is it because we are unable to deal with dissent and diversity of opinions?
If it is, it won't make us unique. It is pretty typical the world around.

But ther are also some COMMON ideals, goals and socio cultural attributes,
or so one might be tempted to think. It is those commonalities that
successful communities come together on to build better societies. WE OUGHT
TO BE ABLE TO PINPOINT THE COMMONALITIES AND CLOSE RANKS BEHIND THOSE THAT
WE ALL SHARE AND AGREE ON. And things that we don't and can't agree on we
can ignore, or set them aside to argue on or fight about on another day, at
another place. For example in Assam net :-).

Instead we let our dislikes, fears and mistrusts rule us. We shrink back
into little cocoons of homogeneity where we are all very alike, and dissent
is scarce; where our sensitivities are not likely to be challenged and we
are comfortable with a smugness that hold back from being a robust and
vibrant community.

Which would be fine, for a country club or a bridge club or a 'naam-kirton'
group of retired 'bhodrolok'. But it does not fit the slogans of a common
ethnic identity and socio-cultural kinship that we wave around to assert
our own righteousness.

And the charade goes on.
