KOLKATA: The National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) has drawn up an ambitious plan to build museums in every Indian state.

"Work has begun to set up science museums in the northeastern states, such as Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Sikkim, besides Haryana, Punjab, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh to generate awareness among the people," Ingit Mukherjee, director general of NCSM, said here Monday.

Mukherjee was speaking at the inauguration of a metals gallery at the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM).

"Science museums are in the offing in Amritsar, Ranchi and Lucknow while work has started for a planetarium at Kurukshetra (Haryana) in the memory of space scientist Kalpana Chawla," he said.

NSCM runs 28 science museums countrywide.

"We are going to start work on a science museum in Jammu and Kalimgpong in north Bengal. Uttaranchal and Chhattisgarh would also get science museums," Mukherjee said.

The NCSM recently set up a museum in Mauritius and is building another in Nepal, he said.

"We have also started taking up corporate assignments. An oil museum was set up for ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation)," Mukherjee said.
