Rajen,
I wish I knew the answer.
The Chinese look on culinary delights from
different angles and classify food according to whether they are "hot" or "cold"
and also on the theory of signatures.
Dog meat is "hot" (Yang energy), hence it is eaten
in winter and cooked with herbs that are warming and aphrodisiac in
nature. The snake on the other hand is "cold" (Yin energy) and nourishes
the kidneys thereby giving the libido a boost. One needs to balance the
yin and yang energies for a long life!!
Small snakes are used to flavour alcoholic drinks
and sold as tonics, same as one finds poisonous wasps, bee larvae,
etc..
The Chinese have a saying: "Except for human
beings, eat anything that has more than one leg!" That is the reason why
tables in Chinese restaurants are round and have a centre leg only!

AKN:
I was trying to analyze the meat eating
habits of the people of earth purely from a Martian point of view leaving
aside my personal preferences or traditions. I found out why there is a taboo
against Dog Meat or Snake meat in the Western world or so called 'civilized'
world. Both Dog and Snake are non vegetarian. All other animals we eat are
vegetarians. But I may be wrong. Any comment.

Rajen,
It also pays to know the customs and culinary
delights of a place.
One afternoon as I was sitting at my table
doing some last minute preparations for class I hear a "hiss" near my
feet. thinking that it was the neighbour's cat, I thought nothing more
of it till the second "hiss" which was a bit nearer. On looking down I
was a Taiwan-cobra at my feet. Well, I must have put the Nath clan to
shame because I promptly propped myself up on the table and jumped out the
window and ran for help to a neighbour.
To cut a somewhat long story short, we killed
the snake which had coiled itself into a corner of my book-shelf and I went
to work as usual, but very much shaken. When I returned home in the
evening, my friend came over and invited me out for dinner which I
readily accepted. He told me that we were going to eat at a very posh
restaurant and Iwas a little taken aback as we normally reserved such treats
for rare occasions only.
On the way to our rendezvous, we stopped at the
local Night-Market (a Taiwanese pheonomenon) and my friend produced a bag
from his car and went into a "speciality" eatery and returned with NT$2,500
(US$100); he had sold the cobra of the afternoon scare and we enjoyed the
promised meal at the 5-star restaurant.
Yes, snakes are a delicacy here and so are dogs
-- both are supposed to boost a man's libido. I, however, have
not ventured into tasting either yet.

AKN: I was told of a story by an
Assamese who were a guest with a Naga friend one day. The Naga friend told
him that they were going to eat 'pohu manso' that night. The Assamese
friend was very much excited as he had not had pohu manso
(deer meat) for a long time. Luckily he asked the Naga friend where he was
going to get pohu manso. The naga firned told, why we have severals pohus
in our own house, and showed the dogs. It was only later only that the
Assamese came to know that the Nagas call all animanls as pohu, and a dog
is simply called a 'kukur pohu'
I say, it pays to know the
language.

All this dog eat dog business reminds me of
the time I was involved in the setting up of the College of Agriculture
(NEHU) at Ghaspani (Medziphema), Nagaland. As we were representing
the whole of the North-East, we had admitted students from all the
seven-sister States (Assam did not send a representative). Now,
the student hostels were common and we did not especially allot students
according to caste, community, religion, or linguistic preference.
The student MESS was also common.
After a month or so since the
inauguration, there was some disagreement in the hostels and one of the
grievances from the students of Manipur and Tripura was that they did
not want to live with the Nagas as "the Nagas eat dogs." Well, we
called a meeting of the students one evening and asked each
representative to give his/her opinion. The Naga rep. was the then
Nagaland Chief Secretary's son and he had this to say: "Sir, we rather
eat beef as beef is cheaper; dog meat is too expensive and we can't
afford it on a dialy basis."
We laughed so much that the aggrieved party
saw the humour and that ended the matter of seven-sister
unity.

Amlan-da,
I am sorry if I hurt your feelings, but when someone questions
why you do not want cows to be killed - or that most Hindus do not
want cows to be killed - I gave a frank answer. I also mentioned
that Hindus have among them - Tantriks who eat human flesh ---if you
consider that I am glorifying cannibalism - well it is your
view.
The fact is that the tribals ( I assume you are from Assam -
and not a tribal) from various parts of North East -till recently
atleast -- have been eating dogs and other animals -- just like the
Chinese. I never said that it is good or bad. You made the
judgement.
Umesh
PS: personally I can eat anything - unless ofcourse you tell is
me what it is --maybe even dogs and cats and
rats!!
