I'm pretty sure we do not want \r in the POT or PO files. 

As we yesterday found another unexplained problem with 
Italian (and some other) translations of the software I think I'll
try updating to a more modern Linux distro than Ubuntu 10.10 
in case these problems are bugs that are now being exposed in 
older libraries on that system.
