Traumatic memories in and of themselves aren't the problem: It's the emotional content attached to those memories that's the problem. That's why we have things like EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques, and EMDR. Probably loads of others I don't know about too.
As long as you're grounded while you're remembering (or re-experiencing) traumatic memories, you can - with practise - remember that you're not in that experience, therefore it can't hurt you.
