Re: explaining things with on the spot thoughts

We naturally embellish our stories, and even retelling of stories alters them. It's not always the mark of someone being dishonest, it's just the flawed way in which our memory retrieval system works. Good story tellers will take advantage of this by adding them knowingly to certain parts. Doing so is a way to boost engagement with their audience.

We can also implant false memories into our own minds. That's why sometimes, two people's stories don't match up if, say, they were at the same place at the same time and experienced the same thing. There's also blocking of traumatic memories and things along that line that contribute to imperfect memories.

When you read a file from a computer's HDD or NVME storage, you expect that file to be the same each time you read it. The computer's storage media have microcontrollers and firmware to track errors. Sometimes over the net though, files don't keep their integrity when you download them. This is why we have checksums to make sure what we got is what we sought to get. But our brains don't have that mechanism. We can't sift through our memories, comparing each one with it's checksum to determine whether or not it was altered. So we're not perfect in that regard.

I believe that on the spot thoughts can be as true or false as premeditated ones. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they're bad. This is where we get into my truth, your truth and *the* truth. There are things about me that are true for me, but that aren't for others. They are not *the* truth. I do not know other people's personal truths, so they are not my truth or *the* truth. But if something comes out where two colleagues are found to have been having an affair, and there is evidence to support this, then it becomes *the* truth.

This principle becomes a bit muddy because it leads to people making excuses and lying to themselves. Don't do that! Lying generally isn't good; however, lying to yourself is the worst thing you can do because you're actively taking part in the sabotage of your own future.
