The minimum is indeed specified at 1000ma (1amp) but it is considered good engineering practice to double the specification to take account of production tolerances, heat and types of use. The stock wall-wart states 5v @ 2amps on the attached sticker which sort of gives a hint of what the SlimDevices designers had in mind!
Putting any PSU under stress is going to negate the perceived improvements we are looking for in a linear supply.
