Why? I would expect them to be looking for equipment that supplies what
luxury goods normally supply. This may have a functional element but it
is not usually the most important part.

"Studio monitors" are supposed to replay the recorded signal as
accurately as possible (setting aside questions of directivity) which
is different to reproducing music accurately. To reproduce music
accurately the recorded signal would need to contain all the relevant
information about the sound field impinging on the ears when listening
to music in a particular room. A few microphone signals combined to
produce a stereo signal for a couple of speakers of unknown directivity
playing in an unknown room does not get close to achieving this. Which
is why a stereo sounds like a stereo and not music.

As you say, relative to "studio monitors" audiophile speakers typically
distort the input signal (setting aside questions of directivity) and
this is usually preferred by audiophiles. Consumer speakers like Bose
often do the same thing in distorting the input signal relative to what
could be achieved for the price in order to be more commercially
successful. But the sound of the speaker is only one factor in why
people opt for the speakers they do and, given the number of speakers
that get bought unheard over the web, I suspect it is not as heavily
weighted a factor as most audiophiles would like to believe.
