There always is exceptions :) 

My major pet peeve is the whole idea that the equipment should have a
"sound" been deep down in that ditch before .

To me it's good when the records sound "different" if all your stuff
have the same sound then something is clearly wrong your hifi is
cooking something on it's own, you may have to suck up to that some of
your fav discs musically,  do sound like "cr*p" technically .

More perspective: in some respects both your and mine hifi is "better"
than most equipment used to record most albums ever made.
