The owner would be sitting quietly without the TP even playing and they'd hear a "brrr" as the knob de-gaussed.

Sorry, no I don't recall the price of the SE in the UK. Whatever it was, I clearly didn't think it was cheap enough to warrant buying one! My feeling is that, nice as it was and still is, the TP is now a bit anachronistic. If and when mine dies, it will be replaced with a Raspberry Pi / HiFiBerry DIGI+ / External DAC with balanced outputs.
