Do you know what the attachment is-a document, a picture or something else? You can usually tell what it is by the extension-that's the part of the filename that appears after the dot, like .doc or .jpg. That will help you figure out what to use to open it. If you can't see the extension, right-click on the filename (after you save it to your computer) and look at the properties, usually the last choice at the bottom of the list that appears. You should see something that shows the file type, e.g., Word Document, JPG File. Once you know that, it should be possible to figure out if you have the software to view it on your computer.

My niece sent me an attachment to her email. I am using Windows XP on my main computer. On my laptop I am using Windows 7. It opens in Windows 7 OK but in XP it is just a bunch of small boxes. What do I have to do to get it to open in XP? I tried different encoding but can't seem to find a right one or will I be able to open it in XP? Any and all help appreciated. Remember you are talking to a computer semi-illiterate person here aka an proud senior citizen :-) Thanks.
