Just to followup, I got a copy of bbdb-expire and hacked it a little (I've been keeping timestamps on my records for years, but never wrote a purge progam). I went from 21k records to 9.5k records. My load time went from 35s to 2s, so there's something seriously non-linear in frobnicating.
