I'm going to give it to you straight. I used to work in a wing at a
nursing home for patients with dementia. It was a great place. Lots of
room for wandering. It was designed for pt.s with dementia. I've also
done home care for pt.s with dementia.

I think what you are trying to resolve is this: I am sure you realize
deep down that it would be best for her to be at home with 24 hour
supervision. Especially if she has lived in that home for many years.
If she has only lived there for a few years, it probably isn't the
best choice. Your social workers are telling you that the nursing home
is the best option, and you know it isn't.

Having said that, it costs a lot for 24 hour care in the home. It's
probably out of your price range. Also, good in-home help is hard to
find. AND good help that has a knack for dealing with dementia pt.s is
damn near impossible to find. Often the help sits around watching
cable TV and may not give the best care if they are there alone and
know that they aren't being monitored. As hard as it is to find good
in-home help, the worst part is family interference with the care
providers.

Family members are the worst. Even well meaning, loving family
members. Each has a different vision of the kind of help mom needs,
ESPECIALLY WHEN MOM HAS DEMENTIA, AND CAN'T SPEAK FOR HERSELF . Making
everyone happy is impossible for the care givers. Due to family
interference, the best ones will only stay a short time. Mom needs
consistant care, and that is only possible if there is only 1 family
member to deal with, otherwise the help won't stick around.

It boils down to this: In home care is the best option... if all the
blocks fall into place, and the odds of that happening are slim.
Doesn't matter how well you and your siblings get along, the stress of
having in-home care and finding care providers that all of you can get
along with is damn near impossible.

You probably made the right choice.
