I have a combination U lock that I leave at work all the time.  Like
you, I didn't want to worry about loosing a key, or even carrying one.
And like you my wife's bike, my cable lock and my canoe lock all have
the same combo, so life is simplified.  I can't think of any reason
they would be less secure than a key lock, but you do have to remember
to flip the tumblers after locking the bike.  I bought mine from a
LBS, so I'm sure they can order them.
