See:

and
<http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?model=VB33&mospid=48523&hg=32&fg=15>
according to which the E90 has a conventional belt driven pump and hydraulic
power steering rack. The Active Steering option, which strikes me as yet
another BMW solution to a problem nobody was having - iDrive anyone? - does
have an electronic control unit.

BTW, I see nothing wrong with electronic assist. It's not what you do, it's
how you do it.

In that context my Mini Cooper S has a mixed system: the pump is
electrically driven (but not electronically controlled) and the rack is a
conventional hydraulic unit. No lack of steering feel or response there.
