I use both the Icon and the Pac Mate.  The Pac Mate makes the
Braillenote look like a rock solid device.  However, the Icon will open
all of the Word documents that the Braillenote seems to have trouble
with.

I feel the same way.  I never had these problems until the 
upgrades started.  I am not saying upgrades are bad, but I think, 
and I am not a professional programmer (yet) so I am not sure how 
this could work, that giving ks a different structure would help.  
Make a core ks prog that handles all the stuff like translating 
braille and spech, talking to ce, and so on, then have a separate 
exe or dll for each application so that upgrades do not hurt apps 
that used to work, like keyword or keyweb.
