When I was prepping my forms for documentation, I used 7.25' from midships
deck to keel bottom, based on measurements made in AutoCAD from the profile
view. My gross tonnage calculated to about 8 tons, which qualifies--and I
know other C27's are documented so it was probably right. But I got to
wondering later if I wasn't supposed to use depth of the canoe body, which
only works out to about 4.6'--a lot less. That's what's used for scantling
numbers and other calculations that consider displacement. But the CG
simplified application method is kinda mysterious. I don't know how in the
world a C27 would be considered an 8-tonner, although I suppose if I keep
buying batteries and gear I'll hit that soon (and ride 12 inches deeper than
I should... )

Subject: Re: catalina27-talk: gross tonnage measurments

if you know the name of a Catalina 27 that is documented, you can
search for it here and use that figure

http://www.st.nmfs.noaa.gov/st1/CoastGuard/VesselByName.html

or get the form and figure it out from here:

http://www.uscg.mil/hq/msc/t3/cg5397/cg5397.htm

best of luck!
