Hi, Joe--
When you support the boat under the keel (and in yards, they set it on the
keel and then put poppets around it), the hull is given a certain set of
loads and stresses. When you support the hull but allow the keel to hang,
this is a different set of loads and stresses.
I would say it is all right to do one or the other, but I suspect from
looking at a Catalina cradle that they would prefer you to support the keel.
But IMHO, I don¹t think it would be good to frequently switch between the
two methods. The inboard engines tend to change prop shaft alignment as the
weight distribution changes, for one thing. Also, the ³Catalina smile² could
be mostly a function of how the boat is stored.
