Agree with you completely about the "wish list" orientation.
Think it goes even farther in Heinlein's mind --
even beyond the Santa Claus "naughty or nice" list
to delusions of God-hood.

But after what happened to me, the fantasy struck the right chord...

Heinlein's books always seemed like (excuse the expression) a personal
Wank-Fest... he basically put in things that he's "Like to be able to do"
rather than things that "Might be possible some day"

You can just imagine him sitting there thinking "Wouldn't it be great if you
could read people and see who was good or bad" and then writing it into a
book... I prefer the grittier writers who tend to write things that might
some-day be true, like Gibson...
