I don't know where you get the tax numbers, but most people do not pay
most of their income in taxes.

That said, a government single payer system works quite well in both
England and Canada. The per capita spending is less, yet it would
appear that the individual level of health care is higher - more
people covered. But people do pay for it through general taxes. In the
US you also pay for your healthcare, you make specific payments to a
health care company (HMO, insurance etc)  through your paycheque and
your employer.

What's the difference? To the individual in single payer systems the
payout is less and level of care is more reliable.In the US model a
larger piece is taken out of your paycheque to cover health insurance,
in addition to the taxes you pay for other health services. And what
is covered varies considerably from plan to plan. Moreover if you have
a chronic condition, such as type I diabetes, private health plans can
be even more expensive.
