Whelp, as his mentor, I'd say it's your job to set him straight. take him aside, maybe over a "welcome to the company" beer (or your beverage of choice), and gently lay down the law. At the same time, see if you can get a read on what makes the guy tick, maybe delve into the fearless wunderkind persona he seems bent on creating.
Everybody wants to be perceived as good at what they do, that's okay. He needs to know that the ones that are perceived as best are often the ones that get their work done in the most quiet and most efficient manner. The simple fact is, if this really is his first job, he's probably scared shitless of complete failure. I recently had an intern about the same age that pulled a lot of the same kind of stuff. after the 3rd or 4th day, I sat him down and said, "look, I can't go in and fix everything you break. We have standards and guides, we use them, if you want to continue being part of 'we' you need to study them and adhere to them." His work got a lot better, wasn't perfect, wasn't always right, but better. And still better by the end of the internship. you've got to talk to the guy. for you own sake. Oh and there's also the personal responsibility thing. Put it to him something like this: the GD cut the site accourding to company standard, you delivered code not to company standard, any further questions? and FWIW, re: CF/PHP, more complicated != better :-) -- will "If my life weren't funny, it would just be true; and that would just be unacceptable." - Carrie Fisher ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Find out how CFTicket can increase your company's customer support efficiency by 100% http://www.houseoffusion.com/banners/view.cfm?bannerid=49 Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:5:176001 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:5 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.5 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
