I like the idea of re-enforcing our borders, and while we are at it, enforcing our current border policies. Perhaps we do not totally shut the border down, but rather be super selective on who we bring in via ports of entry in a few places. If you have a criminal background, have no prospects of a job, have 20 kids and so on, stay home. If you are an honest citizen in your country and are a hard worker and have something to offer, then come on in. No more H1B's, school visa's, work visa's etc... You either want to emigrate here and become a citizen or you stay in your country. And use the military with a flexible ROE, and quit punishing/jailing agents for doing their job. You shoot at me, I shoot back. Simple.
I think I posted this information a while back, but for those who are sort of new to this list: Back in the early 90's, one of the few good things that Slick Willy did was up the number of border agents along the Texas/Mexican border by about 200. What happened was that crime in El Paso (where I was stationed at the time) went down significantly. And it happened in a matter of days (less than a week actually). So, is that a coincidence? Hardly. It is a cold, hard fact that closing down the borders works. If it worked for El Paso, it can work for the rest of the country. And don't start spewing that 'who will pick our strawberries for 2.00 an hour' crap. I guarantee that there are plenty of homeless/out of work AMERICAN CITIZENS who are willing to do this - albeit for more than 2.00 an hour. And to make sure that the farmers do not do what the oil companies do, don't arbitrarily jack the prices of produce up so you can realize the same bottom line. Suck it up a bit and make a little less, employ actual citizens, and make the place a little better. Not just farmers. The IT industry, medical field, etc... No one can convince me that the best and brightest MD's, programmers, network engineers and so on are only in India and China. That is a lot of crap. Again someone decided to fatten their bottom line and hire folks who are willing to work for less. This may seem simplistic and I am sure I am missing a talking point or two, but I do believe that this is doable.
