Right and these are cultural values, yes? Do they make the people who
hold them any less intelligent? I say no. Verbal intelligence is only
one type of intelligence (to take an example that I do not claim has
any cultural links). Respect for education is indedendent of actual
smarts, right? I am sure we all know plenty of intelligent uneducated
people.

To answer your first question, I was trying to illustrate this point
by saying that a child who recently immigrated from Mexico might
boggle at a fractions question that uses pizza slices, simply because
he has never seen a pizza. I sure don't remember seeing one when I was
in Mexico. That was an example I made up, but I thought it illustrated
my point. Gruss said only a stupid child would have a problem with
thequestion, thus bringing us to tamales.

I wasn't thinking so much about being able to list the ingredients as
knowing what it looks like, which is implicit in a pizza question. Let
me see if I can make up an example that illustrates my point. Dinner,
you are banned from chiming in :)

Read the text then answer the questions. Chose the *best* answer.

"Ya Tay" said Begay. "You want to come to the 49 with me?"

"No, I have to go home. Sam killed a fox yesterday. Besides, Mama is
cooking up some tamales and Joseph said he'd go out into the field for
her. I'll stop off at Blake's then pick the stuff up from Joseph on
the way there.
