Indeed you can, but that's not relevant from the standpoint of that new
site's ability to pass link credibility back to the main website where SEO
is concerned.  If you're going to drive all that traffic and links, why not
drive it to the blog at company.com/blog so the rest of company.com can
benefit immediately rather than waiting months to pass some of that
credibility from links at companyblog.com?

As I said before though, it depends on your goals.  If you want the blog to
stand on its own then put it on its own domain.  If the goal is to promote
company.com and drive traffic there, it makes all the sense in the world to
just integrate it into the main site directly.
