Just as an aside, there is too much confusion today with labels. Many people use liberal and Democrat and conservative and Republican interchangeably.
They are not the same. Before anyone gets their panties in a wad, I am talking about the politicians. Not the rank and file Democrats or Republicans. Most conservative citizens would argue that Republicans are not conservative. Hence the need for the tea party movement. Likewise Democrats are not true liberals at least by the text book definition. Here are some dictionary definitions of liberalism. favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs. Democrats (nor Republicans) do not want true political reform. The want the appearance of reform but they want to keep the same political aristocracy in power. favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties. The creation of a cradle to the grave nanny state is not promoting individual freedom. Creating huge new bureaucracies takes away liberties. favoring or permitting freedom of action, esp. with respect to matters of personal belief or expression: a liberal policy toward dissident artists and writers. Democrats do not believe in dissent. For example, with only manufactured proof, they have tried to suppress the tea party movement as racist in order to suppress their dissent. Then there are Democrat ideals like the fairness doctrine and card check. of or pertaining to representational forms of government rather than aristocracies and monarchies. In theory, the US has a representative government, but with incumbents winning repeatedly, there is a new political aristocracy. This is supported by both parties. free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant: a liberal attitude toward foreigners. The Democratic party is tolerant of anyone who agrees with them or supports them. open-minded or tolerant, esp. free of or not bound by traditional or conventional ideas, values, etc. But they are not open-minded or tolerant. characterized by generosity and willingness to give in large amounts: a liberal donor. Democratic politicians give less by far in charity than other parties.
