I'm glad you did both. Your experience is almost exactly what happened to
several people I know, in one way or another.

This is particularly telling:

The people I know? Esteemed members of their company. 100% or above ratings
when evaluations were done. Year after year. Never any issues.

You know what they had wrong? They made too much money. ;) Or they were
better than their superiors.
And that alone cause some bosses/co-workers to be "bullies". People don't
like having their inadequacies shined on them.
