We are actually in open enrollment right now, which is why I
was familiar with the costs and lack of changes to coverage.

It sucks that your coverage changed so drastically. I have had that happen
in the past, and when you have a child with special needs (my son has
cerebral palsy) the impact is even more severe.

I work for a fairly large company (I think we are about 40,000 worldwide)
and I am not certain if that makes us more or less likely to experience
changes in our coverage like you explain.
