It's an interesting point. Americans in particular are still holding on to some Victorian era ideals about gender, sexuality, and privacy. In private life that's fine; I don't particularly want everyone at my BBQ to watch me use the restroom, but in a military situation where seconds can count and lives are at stake, modesty has to take a back seat. I always imagine a co-ed infantry more like what is portrayed in Starship Troopers, co-ed showers, co-ed bunk areas, etc. and its considered normal. I don't know if our culture can handle that level of integration. There will be some who can, of course, but for most I don't think that's the kind of integration they have in mind.
