Yea i know this is no way now but there "SHOULD" be a way they train astronauts to do that. We already train them to be construction workers in space and such whenever they ahve to do something. Or do the permanant heat shield instead. Just have to think of a way to keep this from happening again.
I mean think of if they HAD been able to see the tiles great they are stranded in space like getting a flat tire on your way on a big road trip with no spare. :) Even if there is no way to fix it being able to realize ok this baby is in good shape is a great idea. As you know we're all supposed to do a walkabout of our cars everytime we get in to do that same type visual check. And hell with the space shuttle being millions of dollars in cost it seems like a pretty no brainer type thing, especially now with a station it can dock at for a bit if needed. Yea yea i'm talking out my ass but thats what these things do they make you try to think of ways for this not to happen again. Maybe a heat shield is the way but hell something could ripe that too but maybe it would be able to be replaced in space if needed. I'm sure nasa will think of something the only good thing that might come of this is the govt might realize they were cutting funding a little too much to the bone and get them the money they need. You can't make a fiest with raman noodles no matter how hard ya try! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ben Braver" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "CF-Community" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, February 03, 2003 10:54 AM Subject: space shuttle columbia accident > Checking the tiles would not have helped. > There's no way to repair or replace them in space. > And you may not know that the tiles are not identical - each is precisely sized and shaped for a particular location. > There was talk about a permanent heat shield instead of the tiles, but significant issues of weight and cost. > -Ben > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?forumid=5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?method=subscribe&forumid=5 Get the mailserver that powers this list at http://www.coolfusion.com Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.5
