To the DNS Server, it's multiple sites... To the visitors, it's multiple sites... It's only ever a single site or "website application" to the programmer(s) / developer(s) who build and maintain it. Which really makes the reference to it/them being a single site or "website application" useful to those privileged few who happen to be on the inside of that loop.
