It's always a good idea to clear the counters in order to understand the
rate of errors, in particular to determine whether the input and output
errors are accumulating quickly at the present time.

But you are right that the reliability figure can also be trusted without
clearing the counters. The reason is that it's a 5-minute rolling average,
with the most recent samples being weighted more heavily that older samples.
Samples past 5 minutes ago aren't counted at all, from what I understand.

The software calculates a sample every 5 seconds and provides a moving
average over a 5-minute period. A moving average incorporates feedback from
previous samples into the current result. The most recent sample is weighted
more than previous samples, but because there are so many more previous
samples in 5 minutes, they contribute to the result also. The weighting
decays exponentially for each previous sample though, and as far as I know,
samples past 5 minutes don't count at all.

The details of the exponential average calculation are buried in a rather
incomprehensible Cisco document titled Definition of bits/sec from sh
int. The URL for the document is:
http:// www.cisco.com/warp/public/66/3.html.

Anyway, as far as troubleshooting the problem:

It looks like it's on the 7200 side.

In your mind, break the circuit at that side down into its components. Check
cables and connectors from the router to the CSU/DSU, from the CSU/DSU to
the demarc. Check for errors at the CSU/DSU. They can usually report a lot
of errors.

Do some loopback tests locally and then with the help of your provider.

Cisco has a lot of info about troubleshooting serial lines here:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/itg_v1/tr1915.htm

It might be sort of T1-focused though? But I think a lot would apply to DS-3
too. Good luck with it!
