Basic types of de-soldering tools vary. For through hole boards it can be a standard soldering iron and a $5.00 solder sucker or a full blown heated desoldering iron with a vacuum pump and solder filter. For SMD devices it can be either a heated tweezer arrangement or a hot air rework station with various nozzles for different chips and tasks.

I have a Hakko desoldering iron 471 series for through hole work and a Hakko 850 hot air station. The two should have cost around $1500 new, but I picked them up on ebay for under $300 for both. I'm looking for a pair of Hakko tweezers for my solder station to complete the set. I have a couple of 93x series ESD safe soldering stations to complete the repairs. I also picked up a 491 smoke absorber fan to keep the solder smell from sticking up the place.

I can replace 20-25 capacitors on a modern four layer PeeCee motherboard in under an hour with my equipment. I've been given over 20 motherboards with CPU's and memory in the last year with swollen caps. For $10-20 in caps and an hour of my time. they work as good as new. I'm currently recapping four dual processor P3 boards.

What does a de-soldering tool look like, and about how much does one
cost? I'm getting that it would be a useful thing to have when
replacing caps...
