I dunno about the rest of the world, but if I go to
http://www.futureshop.ca right now (Canadian equivalent of BestBuy), and
look up recordable media, there are 19 types of 700MB CD-R/CD-RW and 1
type of 650 MB CD-R.

How exactly are you defining ubiquitous?
