No kidding, and this isn't a hangar tale, this Summer my GPS was
showing a groundspeed of 160mph one morning while flying from
Redmond,
OR to Caldwell, ID. It was the day before our Oregon Ercoupe fly-in
at Bob Saville's place.
Winds-aloft called for 45 knots of direct tailwind at 9000' but who
believes forecasts, right (want to buy Niagra Falls?) Well, it was
pretty windy when I took off, though it wasn't gusting too bad, and
while I was climbing out I hit some nice wave lift and was suddenly
climbing at about 800fpm as smooth as can be. I climbed up to 7,500'
and the closer I got to Caldwell the faster I went. Most of the time
I was doing about 140mph but at one point I was doing a smooth 160mph
on the GPS. What an addiction!
The next day while flying to the fly-in I stayed as low as I could
and
ran about 90-95mph which I felt was a pretty good tradeoff for the
round trip:)
