Ehud Barak, who after the peace treaty fell through, and the violence increased in the intafada, came up on a vote of no confidence. He pledged to keep at the peace process, Sharon pledged Security. After a year of nonstop explosions, and the perception that Arafat had left the peace table, people wanted security. The Arab boycott ensured that Sharon would win, and implied that the people calling the shots in the Arab community had no interest in continuing the peace process either.
