I'd like to comment on my own experience.

I started at Docs in December 2002, about six months before
Daniel did. I found working there one of the most frustrating
experiences of my life (and I've been in the workforce since well before Daniel was born).

I won't go into a lot of boring detail on this, but the short version is that my contributions went into the IssueZilla system and never emerged, despite several reviews and repeated requests for them to be published.

I certainly would say that *I* "did not like working within the
existing system", but only because the existing system did not
work... it was like a black hole into which stuff went and never
emerged.

From what I've read, Daniel and many other people have had exactly the same experience I did.

My response was to go off and write a book of my own which I
self-published outside of OOo and later sold to O'Reilly.

Daniel's response was to start another project and get people involved in it. I think he should be praised for his initiative, not accused (by some) of dividing the community. In my opinion, Daniel's response was much more community-minded than mine was.
