Scott, As with all design, interaction design is a form of problem solving. In that sense, much of what you write about creative thinking and innovation would apply here as well. So, absent specific IxD qualities to look for, I would ask the candidate to describe his or her problem solving techniques. How does the candidate approach a problem? How does he or she generate ideas? From my perspective, the best ideas come from teams, not individuals. So, how does this person interact with the team and inspire creative thinking from all participants? If the candidate provides a portfolio, for each artifact in the portfolio, ask what was the underlying problem (or goal or objective) the design was meant to solve, and how did it solve it?
