I was just thinking about this the other day; as an example, the section on 
using Makefiles as a poor-man’s configuration management solution in Tom 
Limoncelli’s most excellent “Time Management for Systems Administrators” was a 
brilliant idea when it came out, yet in 2013 seeing such a thing makes me ask 
who or what got to the system before I did!
