Actually, this sounds like what happens if X crashes and drops you to a terminal without resetting some of the video. The screen is probably twice as wide and high as it should be for console, so the left "console window" is scan lines 0,2,4,.. and the right one is scan lines 1,3,5 - which would normally have wrapped at the screen pitch for console. Then the bottom of the screen has whatever was left in the video buffer before.
