From what I recall, the Type 1 was 1100 mAh, Type 2 was 1500 mAh, and
type 3 was 1600 mAh. I think the Type battery used a different size
of cells compared to the Type 2 and 3.

I think they are 1800 mAh.

The apple charger (M1812) can do Type 3. Presumably if the VST
battery uses higher capacity cells, it should be chargable with the
apple unit.

For example, I have a rebuilt Duo battery that has 2700 mAh (thats
what they told me) cells. It charges just fine on AC or in the dock,
although I have not yet tried the charger.

If you are using a system 7.5.5 or later, I think you have all the
software necessary to charge the batteries. An older charger may
need to be flash updated to charge Type 3 batteries though.

Look through the www.support.apple.com site for duo information. it
is all there.

True. The duos are cheap. The batteries are about $100 new for a
good one, docks are cheap (except minidocks). Floppy and adapter go
for ~$30.
