There is alot more involved in getting a Duo 280c on the net than this.
7.6.1 will do nothing to enhance web browsing speed and stability
compared to 7.5.3.
The 280c needs a dialer. MacPPP 2.5 is downloadable from Apples web site
and is the most idiot proof to install and configure since it works reliably even
without a modem init string entered anywhere. Open Transport PPP 1.0 is also
pretty good and a free download from apples web site but is a bit more fussy
about the modem init. FreePPP 2.6.2 is very fussy about modem init string
and I've never gotten it to connect reliably.
FreePPP 2.5 v3 connect great, but takes forever to disconnect. Once the dialer
is installed, the next step is to configure the TCP/IP control panel (or MacTCP
control panel - whichever one this particular 7.5.3 computer has).
The other vital thing the 280c needs is Apple Express Modem 1.5.5 software
(downloadable from Apples web site) installed and configured (to get the
internal modem working). If by chance the 280c has a Global Village 19.2
internal modem then the GV modem software would have to be installed
(this is not a free download as far as I know)
Overall, it is tougher to get a Duo on the net than a desktop Mac or 100 series
Powerbook though it is far more confortable to browse the web with a
featherweight Duo on ones lap.
