haha You make me laugh.
The computer system should already have all that and the upgrade will
install the rest. She did not mention spec's on the computer so it may not
have enough memory to run 8.1 and still be able to browse the web. 7.6.1
will work with 4.0 and higher versions of Netscape and Explorer, the other
option is AOL system 3.0 works great (4.0 is slow) with 7.6.1 and has low
memory use. I have 2 280c duo's one with 7.6.1 and the other 8.1. Both
work fine on the web both have had full system replacements. The power book
goodies are on the install disk's. As I said the modem may not even work,
so an external would be the next best thing, and that is as easy as
installing the software that came with the modem. Never assume anything
until she give us spec's it's hard to say what the computer has or does not
have. If the system was installed right the first time she should have no
problems but if she does there is always the LIST. With luck no one has
screwed it up yet!!! One can only pray! Took me only five minutes to get
mine on the net after a full format and reinstall of the system but then
again I run a Mac network. With everything from a Duo 280c up to G4's
including servers, Virtual PC's and full PC support For my PC users.

There is alot more involved in getting a Duo 280c on the net than this.
7.6.1 will do nothing to enhance web browsing speed and stability
compared to 7.5.3.

The 280c needs a dialer. MacPPP 2.5 is downloadable from Apples web site
and is the most idiot proof to install and configure since it works
reliably even
without a modem init string entered anywhere. Open Transport PPP 1.0 is also
pretty good and a free download from apples web site but is a bit more fussy
about the modem init. FreePPP 2.6.2 is very fussy about modem init string
and I've never gotten it to connect reliably.
FreePPP 2.5 v3 connect great, but takes forever to disconnect. Once the
dialer
is installed, the next step is to configure the TCP/IP control panel (or
MacTCP
control panel - whichever one this particular 7.5.3 computer has).

The other vital thing the 280c needs is Apple Express Modem 1.5.5 software
(downloadable from Apples web site) installed and configured (to get the
internal modem working). If by chance the 280c has a Global Village 19.2
internal modem then the GV modem software would have to be installed
(this is not a free download as far as I know)

Overall, it is tougher to get a Duo on the net than a desktop Mac or 100
series
Powerbook though it is far more confortable to browse the web with a
featherweight Duo on ones lap.
